Portugal (October 1998)
We chose to visit Lisbon primarily because Ana, Julie's good friend and graduate school roommate, grew up there and now lives there again. Julie had heard many stories from Ana while they lived together, As a result, she had been looking forward to this visit for years, and was not disappointed.

Ana and her husband Wagner were kind and thoughtful hosts. We enjoyed our nine-day stay with them very much. Unfortuntely, Ana was not healthy enough to sightsee with us each day. We did, however, get to spend a lot of time visiting with Ana and Wagner, and with Ana's family as well.

In addition to spending several days exploring Lisbon itself, we made one-day excursions to the nearby coastal village of Cascais, and to the resort town of Sintra.

Despite the fact that neither of us speaks Portuguese, we managed to get around quite well, with the sole exception of one morning when we rode back and forth for several hours on a commuter train, trying to get one that a) went in the right direction and b) stopped at the right stop. After our third or fourth trip (we lost count), we succeeded.
